After founding his fashion house in 1952, Hubert de Givenchy quickly became recognized for his superb designs. The French designer is also known for dressing Audrey Hepburn on and off screen. She became a sort of muse for Givenchy and wore his creations in iconic films like Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961). This pairing of designer and actress is not surprising. Both were known for youthful femininity, as well as epitomizing chic. This dress perfectly captures that aesthetic. Givenchy was not one for overly embellishing his creations. He prefered to created striking garment though his skillful use of line, apparent in the sleek silhouette of this dress, with its perfectly pleated skirt. The pattern is expertly carried across the body. Even, the leather backed belt subtly encircles the waist and falls seamlessly into the overall look. Givenchy is also noted for his use bright colors – reflected in the playful print of this colorful dress (also seen in the photo of a similarly patterned ensemble from 1973).

This vintage silk dress is in excellent condition. Givenchy’s noted deft hand is seen in the tasteful bow at the neck of the dress. It is lined throughout the body and closes at the front with shiny black buttons. The arms are unlined, highlighting the contrast between the black sheer and solid, colorful pattern woven into it. In one sense, this dress captures the silhouette of the 70s: the belted waist and casual skirt flowing along the hips.
