A mid-19th century Chinese Qing dynasty era dragon and coin motif ebonized hand-carved elm and marble two-tier taboret. Perfectly sized and suited to serve as a side table upon which to display a lamp, vase, art object, or plant.
Features a fantastic finely hand-carved dragon motif throughout, with them twisting and turning amidst the vines and flowers of the pierced apron and on the wonderfully detailed legs. Dragons on the legs are especially striking, with prominent human-like bearded faces at the shoulder and foot, and highly textured scales running the length. Intricacy and technique of the carving suggests a southern China origin.
Shelf in a coin motif with hints of red lacquer detailing invites prosperity into one’s home, and is surrounded by a floral border. Top of very handsome oxblood, white, and cream-colored marble framed by a floral border and beaded edge.
Piece originally had an ebonized finish throughout, much of which remains in a way that accentuates the detail and depth of the carving alongside the attractive naturally acquired antique character that speaks to its nearly two-century-old age.
Dimensions listed are overall. Legs are 14.75 inches nose-to-nose at foot, and 14 inches nose-to-nose at shoulder.
