Artist’s garden in russia in the 1990s flowers but depicted not in a vase but in nature this work exudes all the light of a spring morning , seen from a window that is the frame. One can almost smell the scent of this garden boris lavrenko (rostov, 1920 – st. Petersburg, 2001) after art studies in his hometown, in 1940 lavrenko was sent to the front, from which he would bring back interesting drawings and sketches of even documentary value. After the war ended, he attended the repin institute in st. Petersburg, the city where he studied, lived and worked all his life, graduating in 1952 under rudolf frentz. A pupil also of alexander osmerkine and genrik pavlovski, lavrenko would also soon, as early as 1954, become chair of painting and composition at the repin institute. A member of the union of russian artists since 1953, his long career is studded with numerous prestigious awards, including artist emeritus of the soviet union (1976) and people’s artist of the russian federation (1994). Beginning in 1948, he began numerous exhibitions at home and abroad. The nature surrounding him in childhood, the vast steppes, the don river, will have a strong influence on the formation of the future painter, one of the most influential representatives of the leningrad school of painting. Lavrenko, in fact, in the landscape, even the urban landscape, finds full freedom of compositional research and margins for chromatic experimentation within a solidly grounded figurativism. His works, particularly those animated by figures engaged in everyday activities, convey spontaneity and joie de vivre. Lavrenko’s many trips abroad and at home are a source of such a variety of impressions that they fuel his already keen interest in genre subjects, always fresh and light.
