Vintage Design
This beautiful Tibetan cabinet is one of two very similar chosen from original antique. Tibetan furniture in the original finish and with old paintings like this cabinet is now quite rare, with most pieces seen on the market these days being 20th century reproductions or in some cases old pieces with newly applied paintings.
The cabinet was produced during the mid 19th century and would likely have been used in Tibet for holding documents, religious scrolls as well as ceremonial robes and valuables.
Often cabinets like these were made by monks using pine or cedar wood and then heavily painted in colours that are typical of Tibetan furniture, such as red, gold, orange and green with floral decoration. Peony flowers can be seen centrally within each panel with longevity symbols and other floral motifs are depicted on the outer frames and lower panels.
Access to the full inside of the cabinet is via the central and right hand panels as those on the left are fixed as with many of this style. A fixed inside shelf provides two large useful compartments for useful store in a modern home. A stunning, eye-catching piece of furniture that would certainly be a conversation starter given its history.
