A superb antique European hand-carved and painted limewood Santo altar figure.
Born in Europe in the late 18th / early 19th century, most likely Naples, Italy, the wooden sculpture depicting Christ Child, exceptionally crafted posed standing in the contrapposto style, exquisitely detailed and artfully polychrome painted, finely sculpted curls, mounted on a later wood plinth base.
The museum quality example presents in excellent original unrestored antique condition with beautifully aged patina. Shows little wear, consistent with age, including gesso chippy paint and finger losses. Overall a superb work.
We here at Lynx Hollow Antiques absolutely love religious antiques, from an important tabernacle, altar table, relic reliquary, Catholic church altarpiece, life-size Buddhist temple statue, medieval Mosque architectural salvage, to primitive Spanish Colonial folk art, retablo icons, and French Gothic liturgical cabinets, be sure to check our other listings!
