The Spring 2000 collection was one of Prada’s most iconic runways. Filled with flirty designs with graphic prints, this collection introduced a series of fun and functional styles that can almost be said to be timeless. Done in a lightly textured chiffon covered in lapis blue hearts. The top begins with a wide V-neckline that finishes right at the bust with a laced detail overlaid on a navy chiffon modesty panel. From an empire waist with raw-edge details, the top has been vertically tucked and ruched to create a soft, flattering hourglass silhouette. 1990s Pauline Trigere creme and Navy Striped Wool Twill Coat Skirt Suit

Mme. Pauline Trigère was a French born, American designer who is acclaimed by her effective use of line, and minimalist aesthetic. Raising to popularity in the 1950s, Trigère favored a clean, tailored look, preferring to allow the fabric to speak independently, and embellishing her designs with either ornate brooches or buttons. While Trigère designed an array of garment styles, she is most noted for her outerwear pieces, and suit ensembles. This ca. 1990s Trigère suit is a wool twill of crème, with navy stripes throughout. The jacket is of a boxy silhouette, and slightly pegs at the hem that hits at knee level. The shift in grain at the jacket’s standing collar, and at two appliques sewn at a gradual angle, introduce visual interest to the consistent stripe pattern. With this jacket, the skirt is a traditional pencil skirt of the same fabric, and falls just at the knee as well. Although it is wool, the fabric is exceptionally breathable, and is perfect in color, and style to function as a casual day suit among many other possibilities. Keeping true to Trigère’s trademark design feature, the jacket can be fastened at the neck with two large mother of pearl buttons. Don’t be mistaken by the minimalistic style of this ensemble. It is highly collectable, as a similar suit in style and pattern is housed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s fashion collection.

As Vogue heralded in 1985, “He stands on a special plane in American fashion: his work is compared to the finest European haute couture. His is a self-imposed standard of quality reflected in clothes of exquisite workmanship, sophistication, and dash” (see note). Philadelphia born designer James Galanos is renowned for impeccable details, and this crushed velvet ensemble echoes his keen understanding or material and construction. Made from soft teal crushed velvet, this ensemble is likely from the 1980s, after Galanos had already acquired a list of faithful customers ranging from Grace Kelly to Nancy Reagan. The tunic style top features smooth shoulder seams that have been heightened internally with silk covered pads. The high neckline frames the face beautifully, with center back ruching adding a soft slouch to the collar. A deep center back hand-set zipper provides gentle fit over curves, with angled welt pockets at hip level. Full sleeves taper to a sleek fit at the wrist with ruching incorporated into hand-set zippers, which extend elegantly up the forearm. Vintage Leonard Paris Printed Silk Mini Dress / Tunic & Pants Set 1970s

Synonymous with luxury and innovation, Leonard Paris is collected for its unique prints, like the one found on this dazzling three-piece set from the 1970’s. The kaleidoscopic print has an oriental feel, incorporating flowers such as camellias and chrysanthemums which have traditionally been embroidered on kimonos in Japan. The multiple patterns form a rich canvas for this ensemble, and is a grand example of designer Daniel Tribouillard’s artistry and love of flowers.

Done in a black silk jersey, the tunic begins with a high mandarin collar with cloth button closures, bringing some structure to the otherwise lounge-like feel of this set. Falling several inches above the knee, this tunic can easily be worn as a mini-dress, the beautifully draped kimono sleeves adding a flair of drama while allowing for greater ease of movement. The matching ankle-length pants have black piping down the sides and are tailored to perfection with a straight waistband, pockets, and front pleats, ensuring a slender fit. Mr. Saint Laurent’s ability to make globally inspired designs by melding several aesthetics into one beautifully articulated garment is a hallmark of the renowned designer. From the 1989 collection, this ensemble is done in a beautifully detailed silk brocade fabric creating a motif of whimsical butterflies and florals in vibrant colors of orange, yellow-green and cerise on a ground of a serene ocean blue.
