Like a princess cut sapphire, this Balenciaga evening coat invites one’s eyes to get lost in the blue. The elusiveness of this quiet Spanish-born designer ran in stark contrast to the bold presence of his clothes. From the Balenciaga Edition line, this coat was one of 12 clothing designs selected for reproduction from the archives of Cristobal Balenciaga’s haute couture collections, dating between 1945 and 1967. The Edition line focused on meticulous research of original fabrics and construction, replicating them with current manufacturing techniques. Made from a lustrous blue matelassé, this early 1960s style coat features princess lines at both front and back for structural shaping. Seaming at the front gracefully curves into slit pockets at hip level. The double-breasted opening is secured with articulated blue buttons that carry the texture and mood of the coat fabric. Duro Olowu is a Nigerian designer who made a splash in the fashion scene in 2005. Educated in the UK, Olowu’s designs offer a brilliant cosmopolitan fervor featuring mesmerizing colors and patterns that are uniquely African and mixing them with stunning tailoring that is uniquely British. Inspired by art, history, and his environment, Olowu has understandably earned great acclaim worldwide with his dresses being donned by First Lady Michelle Obama and style icon Iris Apfel. From his Fall 2012 collection which showcased his combinational aesthetic vision, this cape is made from a masterfully made lace. Bulbous floral motifs of moss green, pear, and saffron red connected by a web of deep turquoise lace makes for an artistic compilation of texture and transparency. From as early as the late 1910s, the trend of Orientalism was all the rage in the Western fashion scene. With various styles, the mid-to-late 1920s saw the rise in the popularity of chinoiserie blue derived from the artistic decorations of Chinese porcelains. This rich color trend graced the designs of haute couture designers such as Lucien Lelong and became widely available to the upper-class masses. From the former San Francisco based department store, I. Magnin, this 1930s evening cape is a vintage treasure that captures its time. Done in a rich blue silk velvet, the cape is multi-tiered coming down to knee level with two heavily flounced tiers that encircle the torso that cover the arms acting as sleeves. While the designer of this haute couture evening coat is unknown, it is likely he or she also sourced from Abraham of Switzerland. The silk faille from which it is impeccably handcrafted is magnificent, with a shimmering copper background out of which swirl delicious blooms of orange, magenta, purple and yellow. The roomy silhouette with its Watteau pleat at the back, open collar and leg-o’-mutton sleeves enhances the beauty of the gorgeous pattern. This is a collector’s treasure. Although the designer label has fallen out of the coat, it is still numbered and boasts all fine details you would expect of a museum-worthy piece.
