Clothing is all about turning the two-dimensional into 3-dimensional. Through innovative techniques and fabric manipulation, Issey Miyake never fails to deliver interesting ways to make this happen. From the Spring/Summer Runway 1991 collection , this Miyake skirt is made with obsidian black satin ribbon stitched at intervals horizontally so that when the skirt is worn, the ribbons create a lattice around the body. This see-through nature of the design gives a lighter feel to the midi skirt. The waist is a wide opening that is cinched to the wearers body. A black ribbon belt comes with this garment, but another belt can definitely be worn. The cinching of the fabric around the waist adds to the texture of the dress around the hips making the wearer a modern sculpture from waist to toe. This skirt is a rare and highly collectable piece that showcases the ingenuity of Miyake’s work as well as being a statement piece to add to your wardrobe.
